Ezra Hirawani and Ben Armstrong saw census data which showed 130,000 families were living without power.
Being parents themselves, they didn’t want other families to have to make the hard choice between kai and power.
That is why they formed Nau Mai Rā, which supplies affordable power to whānau. Now, families across Aotearoa can get the power they need and afford life’s other essentials.

Ezra Hirawani: So with the census information that we received, we saw blatantly that there’s 130,000 families living without power.

Ezra: I’ve got a family. I’m a father. I’ve got kids. To think that tomorrow, a beautiful wife like mine will have to tell beautiful kids like mine, they might have to choose between having a nice warm bath or having kai that night.
And so we decided to do something about it.

Darnell Tua: The big difference that they’ve made is keeping the lights on. It also helps with other bills that come along.
One week I’ve had a bill of $27. I’ve had extra money for kai. I can make sure my baby’s got power. I can make sure that she’s got hot water for showers. It’s not something that is stressful.

Ezra: If we have good specific data about what whānau are going through, then we can have bespoke solutions and make those kind of decisions to be able to deliver the impact for that problem.
