Story of the haehae whakarare

To weave the value of inclusion throughout the 2023 Census campaign, Te Takere worked with Te Amokura designer Jhaymeān Terekia to create a tohu; a symbol of people coming together.

While thinking of the many different people and communities brought together by the 2023 Census, Jhaymeān thought of the haehae whakarare.

The haehae whakarare is about lines coming together and connecting to encapsulate a story. It is a design incorporated into whakairo for Ngāti Porou and throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
