How can I do it?

This time, the way you take part in the census might be different. We're encouraging everyone to complete their census online, but paper forms have also been delivered to all households who have not taken part so far.

It's a legal requirement to complete the 2018 Census. Please complete the census online or fill in the paper forms that have now been delivered to your home. Once completed, you will need to post these back to us using the freepost envelope included in the paper pack. If you don't have what you need to take part, please call our helpline on 0800 236 787 today.

To complete your census, you'll need:

The access code from the letter we sent your household
Around 20 minutes for your household to complete the census
Everyone in your household to take part

Doing the census online is easy peasy

We have created a short instructional video guide to demonstrate the steps you and your household need to take to complete the census online. Doing the census online is quick, easy and secure; and each member of the household can complete their individual forms at different times; on whichever device they prefer. If you're feeling less confident, just make sure you're in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed as it will take approximately 20 minutes to complete the census, if you complete all the forms in one go.

Need Paper Census Forms?

The 2018 Census is online, but we know some people don't have access to the internet; or simply prefer paper forms. If that's you, please follow the steps below once you have received your access code letter and we'll send paper forms out to you.

To request a paper form:

  1. Call our helpline on 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787), and select the option to request paper forms. Alternatively, you can request paper forms online. You will need to authorise that you (or the person you are calling on behalf of) is a resident of the address. To help with this, have your access code letter handy.
  2. Once your paper forms are ordered, they will be sent to you via mail so check your letterbox.
  3. Complete your census (making sure you complete all forms that were supplied).
  4. Place your completed census forms in the envelope supplied and post them to the return address. This is an important step to ensuring we register your completion - our new process means that you should not wait for a field officer to collect these.

Do you need bilingual paper census forms?

You can complete the census online in English or Te Reo Māori; but if you cannot complete your census online, paper still works. To organise bilingual paper forms, follow the steps outlined above and request a bilingual form pack.
