Who needs to do the census Me whakakī au i te tatauranga
All of us count. And because the census is so important, the law requires us all to do it, per the Data and Statistics Act 2022.
If you will be in Aotearoa New Zealand on the night of 7 March 2023, you must take part in the 2023 Census. This means you will need to complete census forms, or have someone complete them for you.

Before census day, we will deliver you what you need to do the census. This will come to your dwelling (the place where you live or stay).
Depending on where you live, a census collector may visit, or you may get something in your letterbox.

No matter where you live, you can choose to do the census online or on a paper form.
If you do not receive paper forms, or you need more, you can ask us for them.
When you need to do the census
Complete your census forms on or before Census Night, Tuesday 7 March 2023. You can complete them as soon as you get them.
Whenever you complete your forms, answer the questions as if it was census night (Tuesday 7 March 2023). In other words, if you complete your forms earlier than this, pretend that it is Tuesday 7 March 2023.
