2023 Census Teacher's Toolkit

This toolkit supports teachers to help tamariki and rangatahi learn about the census, and why it is important to take part.

Inside the toolkit

The toolkit was developed with Māori and Pasifika teachers, and tamariki and rangatahi. It includes:

  • a tailored lesson plan that unpacks the concept of census through Māori and Pasifika ways of learning in nine Pasifika languages, English, and te reo Māori
  • activity packs and fun video content featuring dancer and entertainer Elvis Lopeti, Celebrity Treasure Island finalist and member of Parris Goebel's acclaimed Royal Family Dance Crew.

Thank you to all the classrooms that took part in the mini census competition

The toolkit also included a competition where classrooms could create their own mini census. The competition closed in mid-March, and we received some fantastic entries from around Aotearoa New Zealand.

47 classrooms from 28 schools received a $100 stationery voucher for their efforts. We also donated stationery vouchers to 200 schools in Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel, Gisborne, and Hawke's Bay that signed up for the programme, but were unable to take part in the competition due to Cyclone Gabrielle and recent flooding events.
