Doing the 2023 Census Te whakaoti i te Tatauranga 2023

Find out how we will deliver the 2023 Census, what you will need to do, and how to do it.

Who needs to do the census Ko wai ka hiahia ki te tatauranga

All of us count. And because the census is so important, the law requires us all to do it.

If you will be in Aotearoa New Zealand on Tuesday 7 March 2023, you must take part in the 2023 Census. This means you will need to complete census forms, or have someone help complete them for you.

With the support of communities and people around the country, we aim to make that as easy as possible.

You can do the census online or on paper Ka taea e koe te whakakī i tō tatauranga mā te ipurangi, mā te pepa rānei

No matter where you live, you can choose to do the census online or on a paper form.

If you do not receive paper forms, or you need more, you can ask us for them.

How you will get your census forms

Before census day, we will deliver you what you need to do the census. This will come to your dwelling (the place where you live or stay).

Depending on where you live, a census collector may visit, or you may get something in your letterbox.

When you need to do the census

You need to fill out your census forms on or before Tuesday 7 March 2023. You can do so as soon as you get them.

No matter when you fill them in, your answers should be about where you are on census night.
